Haikou Xiuying Port: The Magnificent Transformation of a Century-Old Harbor

Xiuying Port, situated along Binhai Avenue in Haikou's Xiuying District, was established in 1936. As the main port area of Haikou Port, it has long been known as the “Gateway to Qiongzhou.” As a vital node along the Maritime Silk Road since the Song and Yuan dynasties, it has witnessed nearly a century of profound transformations in Hainan. It served as the departure point for countless individuals venturing out to sea, carrying deep-rooted port city memories.

For many years, Xiuying Port served as the core hub for ro-ro passenger and cargo transport across the Qiongzhou Strait, handling heavy volumes of passengers and goods entering and leaving the island. However, with the full-scale advancement of Hainan Free Trade Port construction, the port's functions underwent strategic adjustments. According to the Haikou Port Master Plan (2035), Xiuying Port is undergoing a profound transformation.

In October 2024, the general cargo terminal in Area 1 of Xiuying Port, which had operated for 88 years, officially closed, marking the end of its freight history. Its general cargo and container transportation functions are gradually being transferred to the Macheng Port Area to optimize resource allocation and enhance overall efficiency. The future of Xiuying Port will focus on developing cruise tourism and high-end port and shipping services. Plans include constructing a cruise terminal and commercial facilities to create an international coastal landmark integrating tourism, business, and leisure. This century-old port is now rewriting its maritime success story with renewed vigor.
